How does everyone handle bad weather when it comes to paying the employee's. If an employee can not come to work due to bad weather, do you pay them? Do you charge their accumulated sick leave or vacation leave? Or does the company just eat it? I would like to know the prevailing practice.
Thanks |

We pay IF it is a decision made by the Boss that the weather is too dangerous. Also, we don't charge it against sick time or vacation (unless they try to milk it for an extra day.) It can make for a difficult situation since it isn't the employee's fault that they can't make it to work when they are willing and find closed roads, bridges impassable due to ice, etc.
How about jury duty? A company is not obligated to pay by law. But here's something to think about: If you keep deducting wages from an employee when something is beyond their control you get bad attitudes and low morale which spread easily. If it was my decision I would not pay for the bad weather day and offer time for them to make up the hours. They could come in early or stay late a few days, there's always something to do, even if it requires pushing a broom. |
