I had a Ta 520i when faxing out over VOIP when attempting to make the handshake it would show in status at bottom of touch screen connecting then cut out after two or so attempts. I talked with the hot-line and they said the machine was recognizing something on the line like a voicemail, then instructed me to go to sim:660/then Dial and turn that Off. Although that did not work it put me in the right place, I then turned back on dial detection, and then turned off Busy detection and that allowed me to fax out again without having to go through on hook which worked when the dialing into memory did not. In Status it showed as waiting forever. I then asked the customer to go there web interface of there phones to see if there is anything attached to that #. It makes sense because I have a 520i. on the same system 10 feet away working fine on a different # and swapped Fax Brds. without resolve.

Faxing out on VOIP lines, falls right into the same situation we all have been seeing with faxing out on DSL phone lines - PROBLEMATIC at best.

Also keep in mind that turning off busy detection will also turn off any redialing. If the fax won't go through on the first attempt to dial, the job returns an error, prints a report, and the job gets dumped. This is never an acceptable fix for any end users I've met.

Long shot of this is, forcing a VoIP solution to a fax line is penny-wise and dollar-foolish. Dump the fax system and go dedicated email and i-fax.

Last time I ran into a VOIP fax issue we lost a customer. The machine would fax out okay to local numbers. And it would fax okay to most of their long distance customers. However the VOIP shows up on called id as "caller id blocked" or as "unknown number". What a lot of people were and are doing to avoid the spam faxes is to reject any "unknown caller" or "id blocked" calls receive on their systems. Now the headers and id numbers were programmed into the machine. So that when a fax did go through those did show up on the faxes received on the other end. Customer was irate as hell when I told them there was no way that I could force their computer system to make the fax machines on the other end to accept their faxes.

Here's another VOIP issue with no clear resolution:

A customer of ours had their VOIP box programmed to standard ring from internal phone numbers, but distinctive ring from external phone numbers. The problem was that I can make the fax machine answer a standard ring or a distinctive ring, but not both. The hotline told me there was nothing I could do.

After a couple weeks the customer discovered new software that they could load to the VOIP boxes that makes all calls come in as a standard ring.

On customers complaining about occasional dropped calls (tx & rx) I lower the speed, through sim 630 tx and rx one step and also turn off ECM mode for tx/rx (sim 631)... Seem to do the trick every time... I don't know if there are any side effects ( except speed) but no more complains from the customers
