| First of all I must apologize for the photo. Of the dozen attempts this was the best one. I guess it was too small, too dark, whatever. I was adding a Fax System J to a KM-5035, and immediately after I started noticing symptoms, in this order: 1) Can't access service mode. 2) Can't download fax firmware. 3) Can't access Fax Defaults in System Menu (only get the double beep) 4) Can't access Fax Reports tab in the Fax screen (button grayed out). 5) "Cover Open" indication in the copy screen intermittently, when no covers are open. 6) Phone number can be dialled but "Please Wait. Cannot be combined." is displayed at the top of the Fax screen, and the Start button is unresponsive. Of course, I looked at the fax system first since the symptoms started immediately after installing it. I started by re-seating connectors and when I got to the ribbon cable I found it. Under 30x magnification I could see that the foil contacts were curled at the main PWB connector. It looks as though the ribbon cable was just yanked out, rather than releasing the cable holder. I didn't really think it would help, but dragged the flat part of my pocket knife across the contacts toward the end, and to my surprise the contacts flattened out. To my additional surprise all the symptoms left at once. I may have to replace the ribbon cable eventually, but I'll know where to look. The second view is a feeble sketch trying to show what the photo doesn't. I just thought it was a very odd combination of symptoms. =^..^= |
