Netscan is one of my favorites. It's a standalone executable (no installation) that allow you to sweep an entire range of IP's to see what's there.

It's great for identifying available IP addresses on a customer's network that doesn't have an IT person (or at least doesn't have one available).

It can also be customized to launch programs that can use an IP address as an argument - like VNC Viewer, Remote Desktop, Computer Managment etc.

It's freeware.

Adding to Gene's list:

Editpad Lite (better than Notepad for editing Prescribe macros)

OpenOffice.org (won't buy Micro$oft Office ever again)

Picasa3 (for handling and organizing photos)

Based off of Gene's list:

  • LibreOffice - Continuation of OpenOffice after Oracle ruined things (I'm still using an old version of Ooo though; I'm lazy)
  • Notepad++ - Text editor with a programming bent. I use it for todo lists, notes, and peeking inside files that I shouldn't
  • Firefox - A good browser. Chrome is good too
  • XnView - My preferred picture viewer
  • 7zip - Excellent zip utility. Useful for firmware packages and U917 address books
  • Truecrypt - I encrypt my entire laptop hard drive just in case it gets stolen
  • FileZilla - Good FTP client and a easy-to-use FTP server
  • WireShark - Sniff network packets between the copier and network to see real, useful error messages (mainly SMTP)
  • VirtualBox - Runs a virtual machine. I load it up with WinXP for the rare network firmware update. I also use it with Ubuntu to poke around the firmware files

Just to add a few:

Textpad- Text Editor (excellent!)
XVI32- Text Editor
AngryIP- Network IP search tool
ColorPic- Identifies RGB or CMYK values for specific pixels in an electronic document
LPR Jar- Java based utility for sending PreScribe commands directly to a MFP's IP address (vastly better than IC Link on Wisecore machines)

Please note that you can send Prescribe directly to the IP of a machine directly from a command prompt using the following format:

echo >\\machineip\lp1 !R! FRPO S1,00; EXIT;

No need for any utilities.

is everything after \machineip\ an example? or is any of it necessary (besides exit; )

That's just and example. The format is echo >\\machineiporhostname\lp1 followed by whatever prescribe you want.

It's important to note that even my field rep was unaware that this worked - and was quite happy to find that it did!

Or you can download a simple and small (48K) utility and send very long and complex prescribe commands as a single file with a couple of clicks. lpr.jar will also let you view the printer status with one button click. It really is a very useful tool that we use a lot.

Agreed. IC Link will time out on longer chains of commands. LPR jar never times out, and can be run from a USB stick.

This is a simple way to edit job accounting IDs to any Kyocera. Once the script file is written, the only line that must be custom written is the admin password, based on the model number of the recipient machine. Just send the script and it's done. =^..^=
