Did any of you watch the evening news with Katie Couric last night? Here's a link to the story in case you missed it. The Story
My company (Sharp Electronics) was honored to have our own Ed McLaughlin (President of SIICA) interviewed and have portions of that interview included in the story. I expect this story is sure to raise awareness of the "security" concerns of todays digital MFP's. We (Sharp Business Systems - South Carolina) already take and have been taking precautions on this issue over the past years. We instruct our sales reps to explain the benefits of the "Data Security Kits" and the risks involved should that option not be selected by the customer. Still, many many many customers (probably more than 99%) opt out of this feature. I believe it to then turn to the responsibility of the individual dealers to then take further initiative to ensure the personal information that could be stored in these machine not fall into the hands of "identity theives". I think that we could also take initiative with certain "types" of customers (like doctors offices, hospitals... any health organization, any legal organization like police departments, schools, banks, etc...) to replace these hard drives on these models before "re-selling" them. Remember, you may have YOUR OWN personal information on some of these machines in your local area due to the fact that many of us actually do personal business with many of our own customers such as doctors and banks. So taking this initiative may not only save someone else from Identity theft or theft of the like, but it could be your own identity that you'd be saving!!! Just something to think about and take the thought/idea to your upper management at your companies to help make your company even more reputable than it may already be.

Regards,
Dan Hill

I'm not 100 percent sure, but I think I may have been in that wharehouse when I delivered some copiers back to a wharehouse in NJ. Not only did they have a bazzilion copiers, but off lease PCs and servers and just about every other piece of office equipment that can be leased.
I think all the Sales Reps and VPs along with service VPs and Managers need to watch that video.

One of my favorite stories is about a Fiery we purchased from another dealer to replace a dead one. I pulled all the hold in print and stalled jobs and printed them out; curiosity got the best of me due to the extreme amount of used space. The Fiery came from a bank in Jacksonville Fla. The stored files weren’t financial they were poses of a very good looking YOUNG girl. While none of them were nude they were provocative to say the least.
The entire service department got a good chuckle off of them. Amazing what people forget when printing their smut. Had to dump a Fiery queue once and found tons of fake Rolex websites, mostly checkout screen shots. This from someone driving a Bentley! I guess the rich get that way by being frugal , Although I’d rather be ‘real’ and wear an inexpensive Movado than a fake Rolex!

Had to take a hard drive out a copier today and delivered it to the Dept of Criminal Investigations unit so they can see how much information is actually stored on these. Our State has made it mandatory now on every bid that the scrubbing software is to be included.

TonerDog - I'm with you.

I've always wondered if Sharp (who seems to have been among the first on the hdd security bandwagon) is so big on the security add on because they make no effort whatsoever to protect data without it.

Interestingly, we lost a deal for a KM-4030 (Copier Only)several years ago because the Sharp we were competing against had a HDD Security kit. The customer just couldn't understand why the KM machine didn't NEED one - since it didn't HAVE a Hard Drive!

Relax? When?!
