If you're looking for fair pay and perks and such, you're in the wrong business...

But I'm trying, Ringo. I'm trying real hard... to be the Shepherd.

Yup, this industry notoriously underpays, that's a fact Jack! Even management, when you you compare to private sector equivalents, are at 1/3 of what they can make outside this industry.
Compare what we do now to what we did 15 years ago, has your salary increased at the same level? Ya, thought not. We are now network engineers/technical/customer service reps, all rolled into one low paid package. Most of us are in this career strictly as a labor of love. But it keeps getting harder every year to justify pouring more and more effort into a seemingly dead end career.

Back in the glory days of Ikon, all you had to was MENTION the "U" word, and you were guaranteed to have a manager pull you aside and gently ask you if there was "a problem".
I'm not much of a union man, but....I'm just sayin!

VIVE LA REVOLUTION !! LMAO

I do not think that rule just applies to this business rather than all businesses, things have changed so much since I was a kid. Also the lifestyles have changed so much people want so much more these days then when I grew up. Insurance, taxes, gasoline, groceries, have all put a strain on all of us. There is a still a middle class you and your wife both have to work for it and if you are not married then life is tough. I try to save every dime I make and invest it in the future rather than spend every dime I make. People have needs and wants you always pay your needs and never have to buy your wants. You are never going to get rich working for someone else you have to be willing to take your own chances in life. There are thousands of way to make money these days if you are willing to take the plunge.

Techboy is right. If you really want money, you have to make your own, not let someone else decide how much you are worth. I am almost ready, fear is the biggest obsticle for me, and the mortgage company.
Dummie, what ever became of the 6 figure salary you posted way back when? I was sure you were headed for the big time! Big Grin
Personally, I've been underpaid and overpaid, the concession for the big money was working for some people who thought I did not need a private life. I get "fair" money now, but my off time is my own, and that's not so bad.

yes agree

the real question dummie is is the company making more money(net profit) now than when you last had pay set?

As for Techboy is right.

yes this is true, and as the owner and my own boss, I feel I am worth a lot more than I am paid now. over the years I often (most of the first 20 years) I had employees who made more than I did, at times 4 times as much.

the customers and the economy and mostly the industry will decide what we are paid which is not directly connected to what we are worth.

Unless a employee is a major looser, almost all owners feel they are worth more money, they just cannot afford it.

Robs I am so glad both the commercial location of my business and my home are paid for. It makes is easier, the years of personal sacrifice during good times makes it more tolerable in bad times. But being self employed means your time is yours to do as you please, usually meaning longer hours and no vacation time off.

my office girl left for a year and a half
she came back she looked everywhere for another job, she was glad to come back at lower pay due to changes, she works harder now than ever and is happy to be here.

this is typical of the way hard times are, we do not know where we are until we are forced to

Last year all the Tech Rep bonuses were cut at our company. It was usually based on 1% of annual contracts that the reps split. Say 10 reps, $10,000.00 avail. each rep got $1000.00 if they got a 100% on their review. I think its a pile of crap that that bonus was cut because it was based on a set of criteria that the reps met. Just like a salespersons quota bonus, you sell or do X and you get Y. The Techs feel they have been sh*t on because they got nothing last year and it dosent look good for this year. It's like telling them they didn't do sh*t all year. The sales people still get their bonuses. What a crock
Angry Angry Angry Angry Angry Angry

I too am ready for a change. Any offers?

you make a good point.
I would ask sales can go up without profits going up
Raises based on one qtr is not good business because in slower months the cost in more pay is there but the sales are not. would a cut in pay then be OK?>
but Gazoo makes a point Bonus in higher profit month could be a good avenue for pursuit that will not mean hurting the company in bad times.
I do see a few real good months per year and a few real bad months I figure they cancel each others.
Gazoo point of sales people getting when techs do not is why I am self employed. I do not have sales person and the ones I hired never produced any long term good customers. Sales people are bigger companies always get the gravy while the techs each the problems the sales people promised.

I will say the biggest problem in the industry has always been sales people getting large commissions while promising low service rates to make the sale. then the service department being held back by the overly low per copy price the salesman pickedfromass PFA
