Well, I have had enough.... Can't stand working for a place that continues to try to make money at the cost of employee reputaion and ripping off the customer. The Copier industry has always been a minefield of owners with used car sales mentality. There are PLENTY of good dealerships out there, and if you work for one be thankfull; give thanks if you have a boss that is more concerned with taking care of customers and values good employees.
I have worked for some GREAT copier companies in the past, Copiers Plus in NC was one of the best ever, but the bad ones always seem to find me.
So off I go back into the IT world, this time as a sub-contract 1099 employee. I am so ready to work for myself. Enough with the bad boss and all the little brown nosed ass suckers that follow him around. Like Ramoras following a Shark, feeding off the scraps that are too small for the shark to bother with. REALLY, how many of you feel that you are under or modestly paid, watch your boss drive around in a high priced sports car - all the time telling you how YOU need to try to save the company money!

Yeah, yeah, I know, "tell us how you REALLLY feel Rob".
Good luck to all you guys that grind i out each day, trying to make the woner look like a good guy, I'll check in later to see how y'all are doing.

Q: What would YOU do for your employees if it was YOUR COMPANY?

(me) offer 4 10 hour days.

I'd think with all the networking, print management, document management, baby-boomer-mechanical techs, there would be a great demand for you in the copier business. You could hang out your tool bag and just be paid to do all the computer related service calls.

I guess the company would still be shady, but at least you'd be in your wheelhouse.

Rob - sorry you're having a hard time.

I've always liked the idea of a 4 10 hour day work week, but it doesn't really work for my customer base (the copier ones anyway).

As a small business shop owner I have worked no less than 50 hours a week for the last decade.
Since 5:00PM Friday of last week I've already put in almost 70 hours this 'week' (BIG server/workstation migration project - NOT a normal week).
I certainly don't expect this of my employees and do compensate them for overtime if the opportunity arises.

I do offer a LOT of flexibility to my employees. I feel that the least I can do is let them leave a little early on a pretty regular basis. If they get done with a call and it's after 4:15 or so we'll usually send them home. If they need to take care of some personal business from time to time that's OK.
Also, personal use of the cell phone, laptop and car are perks.
My employee's health is important to me - health insurance is 100% paid.

All I ask is that my employees treat my customers like they are their employers - because that is what they are.

Relax? When?!

Scotty. I wish all bosses were like you. I have respect for a boss who is in the trenches with me. It makes me want to work twice as hard and extra hours for someone i have respect for without extra pay. You have to have a sense of importance and not just a number. So many bosses now are just bean counters.I know they have to make a profit, but there is the extreme.

@Scott - Coventry is who we use for Health Insurance.
They have their moving hoops to jump through from time to time, but I imagine all of them do anymore. I wouldn't say it's cheap, but nobody can complain that they can't go to the doctor - $20 copay. Prescriptions can be a bit tricky too.

Dumper, like i said the good bosses ARE out there - people like Scotty-who treat their people like they have a life outside of the job, and give the little rewards (that really mean a lot to most employees). But I haven't found any of those bosses in San Diego.
And Dummie, if I had just stayed with one of the previous bosses that I liked, instead of looking for greener pastures, I wouldn't be bitching about bad bosses.

As far as the 4-10 week, it would only work if you had enough employees to do it; rotating fridays and mondays so that your customers did not suffer.

OBTW the new job is liberating and now I am working twice as hard for the same pay, and I am pretty happy about that.

Good Luck Rob(Fred Flintstone). I know how you work and any employer would be out of there mind to loose someone who is dedicated and reliable but then again they will get what they deserve. Good luck again Rob.

Robs you could move here (San Joaquin valley) and be honest and poor with me. Yes
1/3 the pay and twice the love. and bluntly honest.
but you can buy a nice middle class home for $75,000.00 or 3 bed room nice condo for $45,000.00 your garage cost more than that.

I have a back load of shop work and my guy is hurt,, looks bad and sad part he does not know how he did it, went to bed fine woke up with massive swelling in his leg. Everyday I pray he is better..

CA is going BK and even San Diego is hurting now. I heard half the area is barrio now?

Life is good.

Hi Yak, thanks for the offer, but I see your from B-town, and that's just a little too far from the ocean for me. I tried to make a life just a little north of you in Frezberg for a few years, but my fat ass couldn't stand the heat! If you're thinking of branching out let me know; San Diego would be a great place to visit while you check on your Southern Branch office Smile Just a thought
