Why Do You Need A Driver? I've Downloaded PDF Docs Onto My Droid then plugged the Droid into a TASKalfa series machine and printed it out just like using a USB stick, works with photos also.
For some time I've been thinking about what the best way to do this as well. My vision for how this should ultimately work is via an open, short range bluetooth kind of protocol. Print language would have to be standardized.
A user would approach a printer or copier and when they select print on their portable device it does a quick site survey and displays available printers. After selecting the printer the device being printed on would prompt for confirmation to print the job. Additionally the portable device could have the option to prompt to verify the device after the job is acknowledged on the printer/copier. (This would prevent printing to the wrong device within range).
With this method there's no real device pairing and security isn't an issue since it's a one-way ticket, so it would be very easy to use. A standardized printer language means no drivers to install and a standardized set of output options could easily be embedded as long as the printer language ignores invalid option selections (as most of them seem to do anyway).
Of course, a wifi/tcp extension of this would be feasible too to accomodate regular users.
