Can you help? KM-2050 Network Scan and Print options installed. Print sys works fine. Scan has the following issues:- Ping request either times out or shows loss of packets, no response using browser (IE6), Net config tool fails to pick up NS30 even when Mac info is entered ! Scanner NIC replaced with no change. All works well when connected to laptop via cross patch lead. NS30 speed changed from auto to 10meg full no change. Set to half duplex no change. When NS30 connected to network via cross patch - 100% ping response, can view card using browser but after short time browser fails to respond. Printer connection used on Scanner but makes no difference. Cross patch does not work at all when connected to printer. Workgroup has four XP clients, two Brother printers and a modem router. Scan and Print have Static IP. Virtual Office is used linked to other site - Connection is password protected. This has been disabled to test scanner but again no change. Firewall turned off to test.SFU not installed. Thanks, Dave.

Have you tried introducing an autonegotiating switch between the scanner and the rest of their network? Also, have you tried a different static IP? Perhaps the one they gave you has something there they forgot about. I usually leave the scanners dynamic (DHCP) and would recommend trying it that way as well. This makes them a little more bulletproof if they change anything on their network. Relax? When?!

Since the Scan card works ok with a crossover cable I begin to suspect a network problem. Have you tried swapping the two network drops to see if the problem follows the cable or does it stay with the scan NIC? Gene Y. Proximity to stupidity is exhausting!

Have you tried unpluging the network cable that you are pinging and then try to ping it again. It sounds like you may have something else picking up the same IP address. The other thing I would try is to bring a cheap switch rather than a crossover cable and hook into the network and type in arp -a at the command center and see what you come up with.

Fingers, it also sounds like you may need to upgraded the NS-30 firmware via IBVERUP due to the fact that through the crossover cable you say that the web interface stops responding. I agree with the others that you may have an IP conflict with another device. Get with the IT person, maybe they have set aside a range of addresses for use for peripherals otherwise use DHCP it works just about every time. ======================= I have an attention span longer than =======================

Thanks for your input on this problem. Going back to site with a switch next week - can only visit by appointment! Also taking 10 metre cable. Other observations from first visit:- Ping fails when cable removed from scanner - no duplicate ip. As mentioned the print sys works fine so that was taken offline and it's ip used on scanner but problem remains. Cables and network points have been swapped but problem follows the scanner. Partial operation can only be achieved by using a crossover cable. DHCP was tried on installation but never worked - Pressing scanner button on op's panel shows "Cannot use scanner". Pinging scanner host name fails although can ping the XP clients using their names. This led me to use static ip to test and seek advice from yourselves. Will update scanner firmware and post results. Regards Dave

Dave - it's very important to note that absence of a ping response does NOT indicate something isn't at that address. It just indicates that nothing at that address responds to ping's. Most contemporary internet security packages (McAfee, Norton etc.) specifically block ping requests - since hackers use them to find things on the internet (or a network). I know you said printing was working - will the print system pull a Dynamic IP (DHCP) address? Have you updated the firmware on the Main PCB? Even if it's up to date it could have some corruption so I would reflash it. Hate to say this, but if you're getting partial operation with a crossover cable (I assume you're setting both to a static IP in the same subnet - like 192.168.1.100 for the laptop and 192.168.1.101 for the scanner) and you have tried two new scan cards the next candidate would be the Main PCB. Relax? When?!

Scoful - Thanks for the comments. However I need to clear up any confusion that I may have caused on this N30 connectivity issue. Prior to delivery to customers the KM2050 was setup with scan & print options in our workshop and tested on our network. All functions of the scan and print sys worked O.K.- DHCP on both cards picked up relevant info! Connections at user site was made using same cables as on our network. When I stated that partial operation of the scanner could only be acheived using cross patch cable - That was on their network! Scanner is fully functional when connected Directly to my "Stand - Alone" laptop using same cross patch cable. Print sys picks up when DHCP used on their network - Scan sys does not (waited 30 mins). My conclusion is that the fault lies somewhere on users network and not with the machine or its options - but I am only Human after all said and done and stand to be corrected. Regards Dave.

Dave - that would be correct. If it works on your isolated network the machine is ok. Now, the reality - the customer probably won't look at it that way. You could also place a router in bridge mode in between.... Relax? When?!

Yes, if you make the scanning work with just a crossover cable to your own PC, the scanner hardware can be ruled out as the problem. It's in the customer's network. I'm mystified if just swapping the print and scan cables doesn't fix it though. There would have to be a DHCP conflict occurring. Also, remember to turn of RARP when using DHCP. I learned the hard way about having both of those turned on. ================================================== Chris L's Hiking/Geocaching blog (new and improved!) yoyoartist.blogspot.com
