Have a new account, installed multiple CS-820i, 520i, FS-4020, and FS-C5300 machines (school district)
The IT admin wants to have tight job accounting, absolutely does not want to deal with assigning account codes to people and the continuing issue of maintaining them for all staff and students (yes, students too). He wants to be able to use the Windows domain user account rights (each staff and student does have that) to accomplish this. I've been researching this for days on KMAConnect and general Google searches. Now on the KX driver properties under "Administrator" for these newer devices, you can select "User login" or "Job accounting" and their sub-functions, but not both at the same time. Does the User Login allow for tracking prints made by each account? How is it managed? Can this be accomplished with KM-Net Admin? Or PrintQ? I've been reading the online manuals for both of these products. Everything tells how to configure a device to use User Login, but does not give any reasons on why you would configure this in the first place, or what this enables you to do. Just wish the online information about this was more descriptive. Even the online help for the KX driver is pretty skimpy. ================================================== Chris L's Hiking/Geocaching blog (new and improved!) yoyoartist.blogspot.com |

So Chris, lets get this straight, the IT admin doesn't want to use KMA for accounting, Or spring for an Equitrak system, (which let's be honest, is what he REALLY needs). Frankly, unless he KNOWS another way, he is gonna have to suck it up.
Sorry if I sound pissy on this, but it seems lately, all I run into is clients trying to save money by making us techs run around in circles, to find a free solution for something they don't want to shell out the $$ for. Most of my T/A's out there spin the hard drive all day because they are too cheap to by a fax server, or using custom boxes because they should have bought 2 low end machines instead of one big machine, and in the end, the free solution will NEVER make them happy, because it was never meant to solve the scope of the problem in the first place! ( O.K, rant over, takes a deep breath) =========================== Think of how stupid the average person is, and realize half of them are stupider than that. - G. Carlin |

The 820 and 520 devices support Hypass apps.
One you might check out is Access Lock. This is a summary from KMA Connect: Access Lock – Access Lock is used to regulate access to the MFP and its features. Access Lock integrates with the customer’s network, requiring all users to login with their standard network user account. Different user groups can be granted access to the different features of the MFP, providing central control of which users can perform which functions at the MFP. The public access option does not require a logon but allows only limited use of the MFP. I believe it Requires Active Directory to be running. |

Actually, the 820 is not HyPas, but yes the 520i is. The desktop printers also will need to be included in the solution too I'm afraid. Just hoping somebody here knows more about what that login feature is in the KX driver, and what it's for. ================================================== Chris L's Hiking/Geocaching blog (new and improved!) yoyoartist.blogspot.com |

As far as I can tell, the User Login simply controls user access to the machine but provides no tracking info. This can use information already available on the network ( like Active Directory ).
Job accounting provides access control and tracking but requires user registration on the machine. |

User Login: From the KX Driver User Guide:
Use User Login to add users with a user name and password. Use this feature to limit printing privileges to specified users, for secure printing and job accounting. The number of pages/job printed by each user can be tracked by the printer. See your printing system’s Operation Manual for information about tracking usage at the printer. User login provides job restriction by user, in contrast to the Job accounting feature, which assigns privileges by division or department. A maximum of 1000 login user names and passwords can be registered at the printing system. One hundred user names and passwords can be stored in the printer driver. |

I see where you can combine User Login with Job Accounting by attaching an account set with Job Accounting to a User set in User Login.
Can you still use this if you use a separate server to validate User Login entries? |

User Login is one admin. Example, wanna make a copy in a library? Sit down while the librarian logs in.
Job Acct. allows an x number of "privileged" people make copies while recording the usage. |
