We have a lot of equipment that run on hosted email servers provided they have internet access with dsl, cable or T1 lines (not a modem).
Plug it in with DHCP enabled. It should get an IP address, the subset mask and default gateway. Plug in your DNS servers (SWBell) DNS Domain name and WIN servers then add the outgoing SMPT email server name. Ours happens to be mail.swbell.net. ALL of this will be in the "Basic" Settings page on the scanner.
We do not use ANY software inhouse for email, well except of course Outlook. You do not have to add anything to your inhouse servers. All of ours on our demo floor work fine.

If you do not have an in house email server or outside email server via internet connection, you WILL need freeware SMTP server software on an in house client to use the scan to email function. Mita recommends the argosoft, I have used the postcastserver and it works.
I agree Airborne but the question was "without an in-house email server" I can assume they have an outside email server.
I have to admit - a lot of questions that are asked or just plain vague so you have to make some assumptions. Mine was that every business who has a 3035 certianly has an email server somewhere.
You are absolutely right, from my personal experience we have sold boxes where the customer thinks they have a email server and they may be using dial-up and AOL. Just wanted to clarify that one point. There is also freeware pop3 server software from ultrafunk popcorn.
