Maybe there's another firewall running? I've seen a few laptops come with both Windows Firewall and Norton Internet Insecurity running together.

Have you tried connecting using an IP address?

I agree, hopefully they do not have Norton 360 installed and running. I just had a customer install 360 and all scanning is now being stopped and to top it off, they don't remember how to log into 360 as an administrator in order to allow me to make the SFU work again. Well, no scanning for them until they figure that out.

Very good suggestions. Many internet security programs will suggest the Windows firewall be disabled but do not require it. It appears that many aren't even suggesting it anymore - they just run on top of the Windows firewall.

The nice thing about Windows firewall is it's easy to script an exception (or just add one). Unfortunately that's also a problem - it's just too easy.

Products like Norton and McAfee tend to move these controls around - which makes things difficult for us, but I suppose it's to prevent Malware/Spyware/Virus programmers from coming up with universal ways to circumvent it.

I'm assuming from your description won't even connect, but it is also important to note that with Vista you have to setup your scan destination somewhere the users have rights to write - like 'C:\Users\John Doe\Downloads' or you will get an error from the copier side - something about the destination.

Relax? When?!

There is a Windows user called SYSTEM that the SFU uses to write the scanned files. Maybe try explicitly adding that user to the destination folder (under "Security") and make sure the permissions are at least set to write if not Full Control.

But I'm trying, Ringo. I'm trying real hard... to be the Shepherd.

Norton 360 has network settings that allow trusted IP or MAC addresses to send data. I've done this twice and saw no Admin privileges needed. Both SMB though, so could be different for SFU

Dan - are you running in service mode or desktop mode? Desktop mode uses the User's credentials instead of the SYSTEM account that cboucher is talking about.

I had to do this for SMB scanning to Vista may apply to SFU Utility not sure..
At the Workstation/PC:
1. Right-click on the Network icon on the desktop.
2. Select Properties.
3. In the Network and Sharing Center, and then under the Sharing and Discovery title, click on Public Folder Sharing.
4. Click on 'Turn on sharing so anyone with network access can open, change, and create files'.
5. Click Apply (Click Continue to the 'Windows needs your permission to Continue' message).
6. Create the folder and set to share. Click on the 'This Computer' icon in the Network and Sharing Center to display the available hard drives or local disk(s).
7.Double-click on the desired disk and create a new folder.
8.Right-click on the new folder and select 'Share…In the File Sharing' dialog box. Make sure the desired user(s) are displayed and/or added as needed.
9.Click on Share and then (Click 'Continue' to the 'Windows needs your permission to Continue' message).
At the engine (direct input):
1. Press the Scan button on operation panel.
2. Touch Direct Input tab.
3. Touch Scan to SMB.
4. In the host name field enter theTCP/IP address of the target PC.
5. In the Destination Folder enter the shared folder name.
6. in the User ID field enter the valid workgroup or domain User Name.
7. In the Password field enter the user Password.
8. Press Start.
