When installing a new MFD with several drawers attorneys always seem to ask about having one drawer for letterhead and another for second page paper. This way they can draft up thier nasty letters and of course it would print properly. MS Word does this in the “page setup” and when using MS Word everything is fine. The problem is, they have a fairy large folder of templates already set up so they would have to go in and change each template for the 3rd and 4th drawer (what a hassle).

I was wondering if there is a way using EITHER the logical printer ports with command strings or anything else I could do to keep them from having to change all the templates?

Prescribe seems to be the answer but I can not seem to find anything on “1st page=drawer three and all other pages=drawer 4” (LOL)

The kx driver, when used in PCL XL emulation, allows you to insert prescribe commands in between pages of a print job. I am not able to look up the exact command, but there is one for switching to a specific cassette. You can specify what cassette to feed from before or after a specific page. Set up a duplicate driver with this prescribe file in the prologue/epilogue section of the driver. Rename the printer icon "Letterhead" or something so that every time someone prints to it the commands are executed.

I wish I could have figured out exactly how to do the Prescribe and Prologue in this situation. Don Hanna (in Dallas) stated that Prescribe could not change cassettes without knowing the exact number of pages. If you would contact me I would like to discuss it further, Pat 816.737.2900.

Just found something in the drivers. I set up another “virtual” printer and named it letterhead. I used the newest KX drivers with the PDL set for XL. I then selected the media source to be the 4th drawer (2nd page letterhead). I then selected the “Advanced” button and picked Cover Mode, Print on Cover, and the pull down for media selection listed the cassettes (at the vary bottom). Now the driver thinks it is pulling a cover page from the 3rd drawer and is printing on it, all other pages are pulling from the 4th drawer. It does the trick without them having to change their templates.
