(move this from the b/w forum)Customer was trying to scan to email a 50 pg. document. Settings were 300x300 dpi, regular pdf, text photo. The machine would error out and say the file was too large. The file size was set to 32767 K in command center. When I got there I was testing with a 10pg. B/W document with the same settings and the file size would be 4mb. I could get the file size down to 1mb by switching to pdf high compression, 200x200, and text only, but wiith pdf high compression the document feeder runs slow. Funny thing is the customer has two 5050's that would scan the 10pg. document I was using at only 760k?? This is at least letting her scan her 50 pg document but i know I'm going to here back from her.

Set the max file size in the Command Center to "0" to get unlimited size. Also, we have some other stuff to consider. The 520i can color scan, so if the document is all B/W then you can save file size by selecting this as a B/W scan. Next issue. If this document does not have any grayscale images or photos in it, select a "monochrome" B/W (or OCR mode) and you can reduce your file sizes by way more. In grayscale mode, you need to use 8 bits of data per pixel to record 256 levels of gray. In monochrome mode (often called OCR mode) all pixels only use one bit of data. It's either black or white, or binary 0/1. I default a lot of scanners to this mode because it makes files 1/8 the size of grayscale mode. Just a little bit of stuff I picked up when training for CDIA+ certification. ================================================== Chris L's Hiking/Geocaching blog (new and improved!) yoyoartist.blogspot.com

I did a little experimenting with scan file size on a TASKalfa. I got the smallest file size combined with respectable half-tones by selecting monochrome, Text, 200x200 dpi, and some tweaking of sharpness and density. If I'm remembering correctly it was one notch darker and one notch sharper. This customer was distributing auto repair manuals within the company. They wanted the illustrations to remain ledgible and to keep the file size down as much as possible to minimize download time. This worked best in a Program Memory location. It's a lot of buttons otherwise. =^..^=

I'm a little confused by the original post. Is the machine actually misinterpreting the file size or was the customer scanning in color, making the file size exceed the limit? If it's misinterpreting the end file size this problem needs to be sent to KMA for correction.... Relax? When?!

Scotty I'm not sure what the file size was when the customer was scanning the 50 pg document, but when I was troubleshooting I was using a 10 pg document that would scan at 4 mb. I will try the monochrome idea. I think the 520 is set to grey scale and the 5050 is set to monochrome.

On the TASKalfa with the specified settings I got 130 pgs within 17.6MB An interesting thing I noticed is that the scan to email was 1.5MB smaller than the scan to SMB with the exact same settings and same originals. If the file type, originals, and the scan settings are the same why would scan to email be different than scan to SMB? Odd... =^..^= =^..^=

Most all email problems I have encountered ended up being a size limitation with the customers SMTP server. Most email servers have a max attachment size of 10MB and I have encountered some that are lower than that. One test I do is Scan the same set of documents the customer is trying to send via email directly to a PC folder then attach that folder to an email from that PC and see if it gets delivered properly or if it gets rejected. We, as copier techs, can't fix what we have no control over.

Problem fixed. I set the machine to 200x200,monochrome,pdf, and 0kb. Machine worked perfect. A 44 pg. document saved as 3.3mb. I think the greyscale setting, like someone mention, was making the file size larger than needed. Thanks for the help.
