Got a call a few days before Christmas about a dead machine with the smell of smoke. This machine has a DP and no other options. Went to the machine and the U12 chip on the engine pcb was cracked and the traces burned off on one corner. Kyocera no longer includes schematics of the circuit boards so it was difficult to say if it was just the PCB or the driven component that shorted. I consulted Hotline for info on what components were driven and ordered an engine board, exit motor and, just in case, a dc power supply. Installed all three of these as well as a voltage regulator and left with the machine working the day after Christmas. To make a long story short, they called again today with the same symptoms. To make things much worse, it's in a remote area and I can't just pop over there and get a look. Just looking for any information on similar problems anyone may have had. I haven't had too many problems with this family of copiers but the couple I've have had have been difficult. Thanks.

Dont know if related, but had cassete driver boards fry at one time. they upgraded them and the firmware. Can take out engine board when bad enough. hope this gives you a possibility.

Thanks for the reply. I'm a little frustrated with not having access to a full schematic. I don't expect to repair a board with surface mount component technology but it sure would be nice to know all the things that the high current driver chip on it drives. It sure isn't possible to figure it out just looking at the board. Having not seen the second burned board I don't really even know it burned the same chip. I suspect it probably has. I'll talk to Kyocera tomorrow and see if I can get a schematic of the engine board out of them. Has anybody been able to do that with any of these new machines?
