Don't you just replace the digitizer?? Relatively cheap compared to anything else. Once they get pushed too hard, or something sharpish drops on them, their toast, the two conductive layers are shorted together.

I think slpoehead is refering to the flat cable that is glued to the glass. Due to heat and humidity is comes loose and breaks contact. I wish there was a way because we have just replaced 15 in the last 2 weeks.
Have stripped over 12 in our warehouse. |

We have had luck using (don't laugh) a curling iron on low setting to re-adhere the cable back on the glass and no re-issues as of yet .. RODNEY |

Son of a %$#@!. The damn curling iron thing works. My tech fixed 6 so far and counting. Fantastic find Rodman. I too do not want to know how that came about. We tried other types of heat sources, but they were too hot....

Its an older iron approx 18w, set on low. We have only used it on tablets that don't work and the cable is still attached. First use and analog meter and Ohm across 1-3 should be about 1096 +-10%. 2-4 about 194 +-10%. (302FB25191) and 1-3 about 759 +-10%, 2-4 about 306 +-10% (302GR45051). (THESE READINGS ARE FROM NEW OPERATION TABLETS) Gently slide across the backside of the connector several times while lightly pressing, then use a hard rubber pad and press till it cools. Be careful to not let it slide. We put a small piece of mylar with the adhesive part across the connection before reinstalling it in the OP Panel. Make sure it's not to large to interfere with the operation of the tablet. Ohm across contacts to test repair and see if they fall within the above specs. These repaired units have not been field tested under abuse, they have only been shop tested and appear to work normal. Time will tell on the longevity of the repair in the field.

Touch tablets for what? I guess were not having this problem, but am curious what your talking about.

We are refering to the touch screens on the Voyager, Harrier and Falcon series machines. The most common bad ones are on the KM-C3232 series and the KM-6030. Sometimes performing sim 201 will re-initialize them, but most often they need to be replaced. SB#8645 talks about the problem in detail. Kyo said the problem was due to bad conductive adhesive that attaches the flat cable to the glass. It was mostly affected by heat and humidity.

UPDATE: So far we have repaired about 20 OP Tablets and none have failed yet. Thats a savings of over $1000.00. Repairs seem to be holding. Once again, Thanks Rodman.

do you put the curling iron on the ribbon side or on the glass side?????

It will only work if the cable has not been detached yet.. A few seconds on the ribbon side and then press down with a hard piece of rubber immediately until cooled.

Well we fixed one tablet today. Tried the curling iron fix.Worked on one and not on other one we had. I can't remember having had many problems before with these but since I read this thread I've had three Voyager panels go bad.I think I jinxed myself by asking what exactly you guys were talking about.

So far, we have fixed about 40 tablets, 2 couldn't be repaired (the cables were literally detached) and only 2 have failed since being repaired. |

Researching this problem I found 3M makes a tape that is only conductive through the Z axis(straight down through the tape not across its surface X or Y). This looks like what the manufacture is doing to adhere the ribbon cable to the tablet. It is sold .25 in width which is a little wider than it needs to be. Only problem I have is trying to find someone local that sells it. Everyone I found on the internet wants to sell it by the case. The 3M part number is 9703 .25 in x 36 yds.

Having done some testing on a KM-3232E you can use the 2530 series,3035 series and 4530 series touch screen they all worked fine on the unit.
