I looked around to see if this one had been posted but I didn't see anything about it. Surely someone else has seen this as we have 2 500ci machines doing the exact same thing...
At power up, there is a strange noise coming out of this thing... It almost sounds like a cam or something rotating and you can almost hear a spring or something being released... Both machines make the same noise... We thought it was the transfer belt cam but tried replacing the belt with no results... Has anyone else out there seen this one? Surely I'm not the only one... It doesn't seem to affect the copies or functions of the machine at all... Just makes this weird noise for about 5 seconds at startup and then you never hear it again during operation....
It's probably the LSU cleaner. Run "Laser Scanner Cleaning" from System Menu -> Adjustments/Maintenance to make sure.
Service Bulletin 9053 describes the problem. There are 2 eccentric cams on the left side of the laser unit that can get dirty with toner and make noise. I've managed to reach the front one by taking out the black drum, but I haven't found a good way to get to the rear one without removing the whole laser unit.
I swear I read all this on some forum, but I can't find the post anywhere.

A little white grease on the cams will quiet them right down. I have a 5mm x 25mm spatula that will reach right in the gap in the mylar to get some white grease on the cams.
I ended up scratching up my forearms trying to get to the rear one. =^..^=
